liliannabelleI'll admit I've been lax in my fangirling of a show that I grew up with, and consumed my life during the Eccleston/Tennant era. I still consider myself a big Doctor Who fan, so I thought I'd try with watching The Name of the Doctor (not bad actually) and the Night of the Doctor (was that really Paul McGann?!).
But my biggest repulsion factor is Moff, TBH. Not a bad writer, I LOVED Sherlock, but he's such an egotistical, misogynistic wanker. Then I saw this:

Moff *actually said* "...time has passed. I think it would be beyond the dignity of all those very fine actors to want to force themselves back into a costume from 20 or 30 years ago.”
Commentary from astute fans:
"I saw Peter Davison speak yesterday at Hal Con...he feels the 50th is celebrating the 50th Anniversary itself rather than 50 years of the program. He said that Moffat had basically penned something that celebrates his own work rather than something than something that celebrates the show as a whole..."
and "The fiftieth should not be about one man and his ego. It should be about the fans, all the doctors, all the companions and all the stories that have been loved and lived. And we’re not going to get that.
Can people see now that’s it’s not just some people on tumblr who are upset about this? It’s the actual actors from the show you all claim to love, being shunted aside for Moffat’s wank fest.
It’s such a tragedy that this show, which is at its core about inclusion and acceptance and understanding, is being represented on its 50th anniversary by an episode that fundamentally fails to embrace those values.
Rassilon forbid we have a Doctor in this episode who has aged, or is “wee and dumpy”, or any number of things that don’t fit in with the current tv showrunner’s preferred aesthetics."
Now I don't feel bad for not being invested any more. This is shameful. No wonder Robert Carlyle turned them down.

Date: 2013-11-15 09:21 pm (UTC)I'm sorry you are so down on Moffat. I rather like the guy and don't believe half the wank laid down on him - and his writing/storytelling is rather fantastic. So maybe I'm baised. Either way, I'm sorry to hear you'll be missing out on his fantastic Doctors.
I heard rumors RC was in line for the Doctor. I always figured he turned them down because of his family and OUaT. Being the Doctor is rather time consuming...

Date: 2013-11-15 09:53 pm (UTC)I think RC turned down RTD actually, I haven't heard one way or the other if he turned down Moff too, I'm just (confused and) conflating which of his moral stands actually have evidence (!) I just ADORE Robert Carlyle for being so ethical, even at the cost of crazy stardom. I mean, OUaT has been HUGE for his fangirl following, but Doctor Who would have been rocket stardom.

Date: 2013-11-15 10:17 pm (UTC)Mmmm...I have my issues with RTD, personally - but it seems any problems with him have taken a backseat to Moffat!Bashing in Fandom. A lot of the 'evidence' is fabricated, but it is hard to prove what is real and what isn't in a Fandom determined to turn the man into a villian. I'm not saying he's without flaws (he's a human being), but a lot of the flaws that get whipped out on him are Fandom made...generally by people who are pissed that the showrunner (RTD) stepped out to make way for a new one. Who is all about that though...showrunners, writers and actors are always changing. And if you liked his Sherlock, I think you would love his Doctor Who. He sticks rather hardcore to the center of both icons.
But as I said, I could be baised.
He is VERY ethical - but Doctor Who as a show has ethic problems (in small, behind the scenes ways) and time problems!! So either or could be his deciding factor. OUaT is perfect for him - and he really shines as Rumple. No one else could have been Rumplestiltskin, I'll tell you that!
